Beyond the Plate—A Holistic Approach to Wellness

When we think about health, our minds often go straight to food. And while eating fresh, whole foods is essential, true wellness extends far beyond our plates. A balanced lifestyle includes movement, mindfulness, rest, and connection. Nourishing our bodies is important, but so is nourishing our minds and spirits.

Exercise is often framed as a means to burn calories, but it’s so much more than that. Movement keeps our bodies strong, boosts our mood, and enhances circulation, helping deliver nutrients where needed. Whether it’s a morning yoga flow, a long hike, or dancing in the kitchen while you cook, daily movement is a gift to yourself.  Personally, I love to start my day with yoga and breathwork. It centers me, helping me to find presence, and sets the tone for the rest of my day. Finding an activity that feels good—one that you genuinely enjoy—is key to making movement a consistent part of your routine.

The way we eat, sleep, and move is deeply connected to our mental well-being. Chronic stress can impact digestion, energy levels, and even how well we absorb nutrients. Taking time to pause, breathe, and check in with yourself is just as important as the food on your plate. Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and gratitude journaling have been instrumental in my own health journey. These small daily rituals help shift my focus away from stress and toward appreciation, creating space for a more intentional and joyful life.

We live in a culture that glorifies hustle, but rest is one of the most critical elements of a truly healthy life. Sleep is when our bodies repair, detoxify, and regenerate. Skimping on rest can lead to imbalances that no amount of healthy eating can fix.  One of my favorite ways to wind down in the evening is by sipping a calming herbal tea and turning off screens at least an hour before bed. Creating a soothing nighttime routine helps signal to my body that it’s time to rest, improving sleep quality and overall well-being.  In fact, one of my therapists told me that the key to good sleep hygiene is making sure you have a solid night time routine.  This is why I take 15 minutes just before my lamp turns off, I stretch, letting my body know than I am preparing for it to completely shut down.

Wellness isn’t just about the habits we build—it’s about creating a life that feels balanced and fulfilling. Finding joy in movement, prioritizing rest, and making time for mindfulness all contribute to overall well-being. By listening to our bodies and giving ourselves the care we deserve, we create a foundation for lasting health.

This fresh herb tea is a simple, soothing drink that I love making in the evening to help me unwind. The combination of citrus, ginger, and fresh herbs makes for a calming and aromatic experience.

Ingredients:

  • 1 small piece of fresh ginger, sliced

  • Peels from 1 lemon and 1 orange

  • 1 lemon, sliced into wedges

  • 2 sprigs fresh mint

  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 1 tsp honey (or to taste)

  • 3 cups hot water

Instructions:

  1. Place the ginger, citrus peels, lemon wedges, mint, rosemary, and cinnamon stick in a French press or small saucepan.

  2. Pour hot water over the ingredients and let steep for 5-7 minutes.

  3. Strain into a mug and stir in honey to taste.

  4. Sip and enjoy the natural warmth and relaxation this tea brings.

A healthy lifestyle is about balance—nourishing your body with real food, moving in ways that feel good, prioritizing rest, and cultivating meaningful connections. Health isn’t just a destination; it’s a way of living that embraces the whole self. Let’s take a deep breath, move with intention, and savor every moment of the journey. Cheers to a full, vibrant life!
