Understanding Your Digestive Needs—How Your Gut Works

Your gut is more than just where your food goes after a meal—it’s a thriving ecosystem that affects everything from nutrient absorption to immune function and even your mood. Understanding how your digestive system works is the first step to learning how to nourish it properly, and let’s be honest, a happy gut makes for a much happier you.

Think of digestion as a well-orchestrated freeway system, where different lanes represent different stages of the digestive process, and every vehicle (nutrient) has a designated path to reach its destination efficiently. It all starts the moment you take a bite. Your teeth and saliva begin breaking down food while enzymes get to work processing carbohydrates. Once swallowed, food travels down the esophagus to the stomach, where acid and digestive enzymes break it down further—this is where proteins get their turn to be dismantled.

From there, your meal moves into the small intestine, where the real magic happens. The pancreas and liver join the party, releasing bile and enzymes that help absorb fats and essential nutrients. The small intestine is like a sponge, extracting vitamins, minerals, and energy to distribute throughout the body. The leftovers then travel to the large intestine, where fiber and beneficial bacteria work together to extract water, create certain vitamins, and keep things moving. Finally, anything your body doesn’t need gets sent on its way—because let’s face it, nobody wants a sluggish system.

So, what does all this mean for you? It means that what you eat and how you eat it directly impacts how efficiently this whole process runs. Overloading your gut with processed foods, sugars, and hard-to-digest ingredients can slow things down causing a traffic jam of discomfort and bloating. On the flip side, feeding it fiber-rich vegetables, fermented foods, and high-quality proteins keeps digestion smooth and your microbiome flourishing, creating a seamless commute from the moment you put food into your mouth to the moment it ... well, you know the rest.

One of my favorite ways to support digestion is through warm, nourishing soups. A gentle, broth-based soup is easy on the digestive system, packed with gut-friendly nutrients, and perfect for those moments when your stomach needs a little extra love.
